Sakata Gintoki (坂田銀時)
Sakata Gintoki (坂田銀時)
- Leader of the Yorozuya, Gin-san can often be seen slacking around on the streets. He loves sweet food and reading Shonen Weekly Jump. Although he is the main protagonist of the series, it is a running gag that that his personality is entirely unfit to be one. His bokuto is his weopen of choice. Enjoy his GIFs here. Shimura Shinpachi (志村新八)
- Struggling to make a living as a samurai before meeting Gintoki, Shinpachi lived with his sister, Shimura Otae, in their family dojo. He is the straight man (tsukkomi) of the Yorozuya, despite sometimes showing a goofy personality. Also a hardcore idol otaku, he leads the Otsu fan club with an iron fist. watch him deliver his punch lines here.
Kagura (神楽)
- Kagura is the third member to join the Yorozuya. Loves munching on pickled seaweed (sukonbu). Personality wise, she has been shown to be crass, impatient and condescending to her team mates. Despite that, she has a gentle and caring side to her, and genuinely enjoys living with the Yorozuya. Sadaharu is her pet. She has a strong rivalry with Sougo. Sadaharu (定春)
- Sadaharu is the Yorozuya's pet and mascot. Although his welfare is mostly Kagura's responsibility, Gintoki still often ends up having to walk him. Initially, Gin-san and Shinpachi were fearful of Sadaharu, but in the later episodes, he is well accepted and loved by all members of the Yorozuya. GIFs here.
Shinsengumi (真選組)
Kondo Isao (近藤 勲), (Also known as Gorilla ゴリラ)
- Commander of the Shinsengumi. He stalks Otae regularly but almost always gets turned down. It is a running gag in the series that he is compared to a gorilla. Although he is usually anoyed at others for calling him names, he sometimes uses the nickname to identify himself. Enjoy his stalker antics here.

Hijikata Toushirou (土方 十四郎) , Otaku name : Tosshi
- Hijikata is the vice-commander of the Shinsengumi. He is a skilled swordsman, and is sometimes referred to as the demonic vice commander. He enforces very strict regulations, everyone in the Shinsengumi besides Sougo respects him. Has an unhealthy obsession over mayonnaise, and is known to douse whatever he eats with it. He has a rivalry with Gintoki. Watch him look cool here.
Okita Sougo (沖田 総悟)
- Leader of division 1 in the Shinsengumi, Sougo is often jealous of Hijikata. The two of them hold a frenemy relationship, Sougo tries to piss Hijikata off, and deliberately attempts to injure him on a regular basis. His trademark items are a rocket launcher, and a red colour sleeping eye mask (which Elsie really wants). He holds a strong rivalry with Kagura as well, and taunts her many times. Yamazaki Sagaru (山崎 退)
-Yamazaki is part of the Shinsengumi, his roles seem limited to working undercover as a spy. He loves playing badminton, often enraging Hijikata with his badminton antics. during stakeouts, he eats only anpan (red bean bun), believing that it would bring him luck. It is a running joke that he is a plain character, on par with Shinpachi. Yamazaki plainness here.

Katsura Kotarou (桂 小太郎), Nickname : Zura ( ヅラ)
- Katsura is the leader of the new moderate anti government faction, (Jouishishi). Despite being a total baka, he is charismatic enough to command loyalty from the Jouishishi. As their leader, he is targeted by the Shinsengumi. He is close friends with Gintoki, and tries to convince him to join the terrorists . He is upset when someone gets his name wrong, and the line "Zura janai, Katsura da!" has become a running gag. Almost always with Elizabeth. Joui Joy here.
Sakamoto Tatsuma (坂本 辰馬)
- The current leader of the intergalactic commercial entity known as the Kaientai, Sakamoto fought alongside the rest during the amanto expulsion war. He has a overly positive attitude and always cracks laughs at the most inappropriate situations, drawing the wrath of Gintoki and his subordinate, Mutsu. He frequently mislabels Gintoki as Kintoki, often getting bashed up for that. he was the one who gave Elizabeth to Katsura. Bakamoto GIFs here.
Takasugi Shinsuke (高杉 晋助)
- One of the major antogonist of the series, Takasugi is the leader of the Kiheitai, an extremist group bent on world destruction. Although once comrades with Katsura and Gintoki, they severed their relationship to him after the benizakura arc. He now travels space with Kamui. Severe creepiness here.
Female Characters
Shimura Tae (志村 妙)
-Shinpachi's older sister. She is stalked by Kondo, despite making it clear on numerous attempts that she does not reciprocate his feelings. She has a very violent personality, and often has a smile fixed to her face as she says dangerous things. Works at Snack smile as a hostess to support the family dojo. She loves eating bargain dash ice cream. The only dish she can cook is tamagoyaki, although the results resemble dark matter rather than food. Violent stalker bashing and more here.
Sarutobi Ayame (猿飛 あやめ)
- A ninja who holds a stalkerish crush on Gintoki. She often has SM fantasies about him, despite an obviously otherwise situation. Her nickname is Sa-chan. She is extremely myopic to the extent of even being able to mistake Sadaharu for Gintoki without her spectacles. Her favorite food is natto. SM ninja stalker here.
Yagyuu Kyuubei (柳生 九兵衛)
- As Otae's childhood friend, Kyuubei holds a close friendship with her, even after the events of the Yagyuu arc. Trained to be a samurai from young, she displays masculine behavior and tries to hide her femininity. This causes certain misunderstandings as her protector Ayumu once thought she was going to construct a Tower of Babel. Gender weirdness here.
Tsukuyo (月詠),
-A highly trained ninja, Tsukuyo is the leader of the Hyakka, the squad guarding Yoshiwara. She is a skilled ninja. She may or may not have romantic feelings for Gintoki. Extremely weak to alcohol, her serious demeanor turns into a viooent one under its influence. Introduced later in the series, she has less images than the others. Nontheless, check out her GIFs here.

Close friends with Gin and partners in poverty, he jumps from job to job. He is a man who is defined by his sunglasses. Left by his wife, he stays in the streets. Madao is translated in the English dub as DORK - dumb old retarded kook. For some reason this pisses me off :( Anyway, check out the god of cardboard here.

- Real name Terada Ayano, Otose is the Yorozuya's landlady, frequently chasing Gintoki for rent. She owns the bar beneath them, and is the boss of Catherine and Tama. She is regarded as one of the four devas of Kabuki-chou. Old Hag here.

- Known as Otsuu-chan by her fans, she's the stuff of Shinpachi's otaku fantasy dreams. Her songs don't make sense, and she has a habit of adding random "cute" words at the end of her sentences. Idol kawaii here.
